Fissure Sealants

A fissure sealant is tooth colored flowable filling material that is put on the tooth surface to cover or seal the natural grooves and fissures of molars thus making it difficult for food to accumulate and at the same time making it easier to brush these teeth.

Fissure sealants therefore help prevent tooth decay and thus avoid extensive fillings later.

Who should get dental sealants?

There is no age limit for sealants but the main target groups include:

  • Children ages 3-4 years: baby / milk molars
  • Children ages 6yrs and above- 1st and 2nd permanent molars
  • Adults with very deep stained molar fissures

Why are sealants used?

The grooves on the top of molars and premolars are deep and hard to clean with a toothbrush. Bacteria can build up in the grooves and cause cavities.

Sealants can help:

  • Keep food, acids, and plaque from sitting in the grooves of the molars and premolars
  • Prevent decay and cavities
